Museum - No. 3 Hold - Troop Bunks
No. 3 Hold Troop Bunks
The JEREMIAH O'BRIEN was intended to carry cargo, but during the Normandy landings she did carry troops in accommodations similar to what you see here.
This display is similar to temporary bunks that were installed in No. 5 ‘Tween Deck. Troops were also quartered in No. 4 Hold on cots, and others stayed on deck.
Although some Liberty ships were converted with an extra galley as well as heads for the troops, the O’BRIEN did not have any of these luxuries.
In addition to the bunks, the only additional accommodations were makeshift open latrines that hung over the rail. The troops did not eat out of the ship’s galley, and provided their own food.
